The Princess of Polka Dots Inspired Our Pumpkin Sculptures

17th Oct 2021

Room 6 has recently been learning about Yayoi Kusama, also known as the princess of polka dots.

Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist most famously known for her use of polka dots in all her art. She paints, makes sculptures and creates amazing installations known as infinity rooms. The infinity rooms are created using mirrors and lights. You can 'visit' one through this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wcXyzv79JY. We really enjoyed exploring the infinity room.

Kusama also really likes pumpkins. She thinks their form is 'humorous' or funny. We examined the different shapes, textures and colours that pumpkins can have before moulding our own from clay. Taking inspiration from Kusama and her use of polka dots, we used pencils to create patterns on our pumpkins. Then we waited for the clay to dry. We had to be very patient. When they were finally dry, after about a week, we painted them white. This helped the other paint colours show up more brightly in our finished pieces.

Everyone agreed that this was a really fun activity and we think they turned out great in the end!
